Travel Essentials In Zambia are the necessities required to make your journey a pleasurable, trouble free and a memorable one in Zambia.

Whether you are a tourist, a transient visitor or a business traveller to Zambia, the following information is for you:


Visas are a necessity at the point of entry.


Vaccinations against yellow fever are required and precautions against malaria are necessary.

3. Driving

In Zambia, driving is on the left side and the Legal age is from 18 years and up. If you’re driving into the country, an international driver’s license is a requirement.

4. Currency

The kwacha is the national currency divided in denominations of 2, 5, 10, 50, and 100 Kwacha notes. Coins are in denominations of 1 Kwacha (K1), 5n, 10n and 50n (n is short for ngwee). The Kwacha was first circulated on 16th January 1968. 

The Kwacha notes do not have any human portrait on them. They have a fish eagle instead. 

There’s no limit on the amount of currency you can bring in, but it should be declared at the point of entry.


Banking hours are between 0815-1530 hours Mondays to Fridays and 0815-1130 hours on Saturdays. There are several banks in Zambia.


Zambia is two hours ahead of GMT.


English is the official language, but the country has numerous dialects numbering about 72. Of these, the mostly spoken are Bemba, Nyanja, Lunda, Kaonde, Luvale, Lozi and Tonga.

Being landlocked, you enter Zambia using air, rail, or road transport. If by road, it can be through any of the following border posts :

1. Chirundu Border Post

Chirundu border post is located between Zimbabwe and Zambia. 

2. Kasumba Lesa Border

Kasumba Lesa Border Post is between the Zambian Copperbelt and Katanga province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

3. Nakonde Border Post

It is between Zambia and Tanzania at Nakonde (Zambia) and Tunduma (Tanzania).

4. Mokambo Border Post

Mokambo Border Post is between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It is found near Mufulira town on the copperbelt province.

5. Sakanya Border Post

It is also between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is found near Ndola on the copperbelt.

6. Kazungula (Using a ferry)

Kazungula is between Zambia and Botswana. Crossings are by a ferry.

7. Katima mulilo Border Post

Found between Zambia and Namibia. You enter from Namibia into Zambia through the Capriv Strip. 

8. Mwami Border Post

It is between Zambia and Malawi.

  • Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (Former Lusaka International Airport) in Lusaka.
  • Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport (Former Livingstone International Airport) in Livingstone.
  • Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport (Former Ndola International Airport) in Ndola.
