The October 2013 Zambian Inflation Rate Decreases To 6.9 Percent

The October 2013 Zambian inflation rate decreased to 6.9 percent from 7 percent recorded in August. The CSO (Central Statistical Office) attributed the drop down to a reduction in the annual food inflation rate which decreased from 6.5 percent recorded in September to 5.9 percent in October.

Of the total 6.9 percent inflation, food and non-alcoholic beverage products accounted for 3.1 percentage points and non-food products accounted for 3.8 percentage points.

A comparison of retail prices between September and October 2013 showed an increase in the national average price of a 25 kilogram bag of breakfast mealie meal by 1.1 percent from K64.22 to K64.90.

The national average price of the same quantity of roller mealie meal also increased from K47.40 to K47.81.

Trade Surplus

The CSO director Mr. John Kalumbi also revealed that Zambia recorded a trade surplus valued at K53 million in September.

The country has continued to record trade surpluses since January with the highest recorded in April valued at K364 million and the lowest recorded was in September valued at K53 million.
