Nyika National Park

Nyika National Park covers an area of 3200 square kilometers in North-east Zambia. Nyika Park is an extension of a national park of the same name across the border in neighboring Malawi.

Established in 1966, the Park lies on Nyika plateau and because of its high elevation (2000 meters above sea level), the temperature is warm during the day.

History

During colonial times, when both Zambia and Malawi were British colonies, the now two Nyika Parks were administered as one Park. At independence, it was divided into two with the one in Malawi being the larger of the two.

Wildlife

The Park is home to a large number of animals which includes leopard, roan, zebra, duiker, bushbuck, reedbuck, warthog and eland.

A number of bird species have been documented throughout the Park. The most common species include the starred robin, Cape batis, moustached green tinkerbird, yellow-streaked bulbul, the bar tailed trogon and the white tailed crested flycatcher. Migrants are also common.

Climate

The Park experiences warm temperatures as a result of its high altitude. It lies at an elevation of 2000 meters above sea level. The wet season lasts from December to March. April to October is the dry season and the cold season is from May to September.

Getting There

The Park is accessible using any one of the two directions from within Zambia before one crosses over into Malawi. You can either use the Mpika route (then through Isoka to Muyombe), or from Chipata and then to the Nyika Park through Katumbi in Malawi. It should be noted however that the Park is very easily accessible from the Malawian side, and the visitor is at liberty to visit both sides of the Park.
