Lumangwe Falls, 80 kilometres from Mporokoso are on Kalungwishi River in Northern Province. They are found at about 10 kilometres off the main road from Kawambwa to Mporokoso. The Falls have a height of 30-40 metres and a width of about 160 metres. On the same river, there are also Kabwelume Falls, at a distance of about five kilometres.
Lumangwe Falls looks like a miniature Victoria Falls. In fact in photographs it is often mistaken for the Victoria Falls.
In the rainy season period of April to May, mist from the falls even sustains a small rain forest and the spray from the water fall is carried some 100 metres into the air and the attendant roaring sound in the gorge below appears to shake the ground, just like the Victoria Falls! The Falls is indeed Zambia’s second largest waterfalls.”
A legend of olden days has it that there was a Great Snake Spirit called Lumangwe, which was said to have stretched itself between the two falls, the Lumangwe and Kabweluma.
Adorning the Kalungwishi River in northern Zambia, this is the largest waterfalls which are completely found within Zambia, unlike the Victoria Falls, the first largest shared between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Capture your memories of your visit at the Falls by taking photographs from two different vantage points, the bank of the river at the top or from a cliff almost opposite the drop.
