July 2014 Zambian Inflation Rate – Up To 8.00 Per cent!

The July 2014 Zambian inflation rate was recorded at 8 per cent, form 7.9 per cent in June 2014. The rise in the inflation rate was attributed to products such as alcoholic beverages, tobacco, housing, electricity, gas and other fuels, and health.

The July 2014 inflation figures were released by Central Statistical Office Director, John Kalumbi on 30 July 2014. He said between July 2013 and July 2014 the annual rate of inflation increased for Alcohol beverages and tobacco, housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, health and other housing equipment.

However, the rate decreased for food and non-alcoholic beverages, transport, clothing, footwear, communication and miscellaneous goods and services.

The total 8.0 per cent annual inflation rate comprised of food and non-alcoholic beverage products at 3.5 per cent and non-food products at 4.5 per cent.

The increases in the annual rate were recorded in the following provinces Central, Lusaka and North Western Provinces

Reductions in the inflation were recorded in the following provinces Copperbelt, Eastern, Luapula, Northern, Muchinga and Western Provinces.

Lusaka, as the Capital city recorded the highest rate at 2.5 per cent whereas North Western Province had the lowest at 0.3 per cent.

Zambia Trade Surplus For June 2014

The country recorded a trade surplus valued at K47.7 million in June 2014. This was an increment from K41.1 million recorded in May 2014. This means that the country exported more in June 2014 than it imported in nominal terms.

Food Inflation

The annual food inflation rate for July was recorded at 6.9 per cent representing decrease of 0.9 percentage points from the 7.8 per cent recorded in June 2014.

Non-Food Inflation

The annual non-food inflation increased by 1.2 percentage points from 8.0 per cent recorded in June 2014.

Average Prices Of Selected Goods

The following are recorded movements in the national average retail prices of some selected items between June 2014 and July 2014:
  • 25 kg bag of breakfast Mealie meal decreased from K 73.72 to K73.20
  • 25 kg bag of roller mealie meal reduced from K 57.47 to K55.77
  • 20 litre tin of Maize grain decreased from K 25.99 to K 24.22
  • Electricity tariffs for low cost increased from K95.57 to K121.38
  • Electricity tariffs for high cost increased from K297.96 to K338.40
