July 2013 Zambian Inflation

The July 2013 Zambian Inflation rate remained unchanged at 7.3 per cent, the same as that of June 2013.


However, there was a decrease in the annual non-food inflation rate by 0.2 percentage points from 7.6 percent in June 2013 to 7.4 percent in July 2013. The figures were released by the Central Statistical Office (CSO) in a press briefing.

The following items had a reduction in the annual inflation rate;

  • Clothing and Footwear
  • Housing
  • Water
  • Electricity
  • Furnishings
  • Household Equipment And Routine Household Maintenance
  • Health
  • Communication
  • Recreation and Culture
  • Education
  • Miscellaneous Goods And Services

On the other hand, the annual rate of inflation increased for transport, restaurant and hotel during the same period.

Food Inflation

An increase was recorded in the annual food inflation rate from 0.4 percent to 0.8 percent between the months June 2013 and July 2013.

Non-Food Inflation

There was an increase in the inflation rate for non-food products from 0.3 percent in June 2013 to 0.5 percent in July 2013. This was an increase of 0.2 percentage points.

Prices Of Selected Goods

The following are recorded increases in the national average retail prices of selected items between June and July 2013:

Contribution to Overall Inflation Per Province

A look at the overall inflation shows that Lusaka Province contributed 2.2 percentage points, followed by the Copperbelt Province with 1.6 percentage points and the North-western province contributed the least with 0.2 percentage points.

Trade Surplus In June 2013

In June 2013, Zambia recorded a trade surplus valued at K109 Million from K 268 Million recorded in May 2013. This is a continuation of recording trade surpluses since January 2013.

  • Asia-(26.5 %)
  • Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA)-(25.7%)
  • European Union-(12.6 %)
