The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicked off on the 19th January 2013 in South Africa. The tournament was initially supposed to be hosted by Libya, but they withdrew their bid because of the civil war in that country. The hosts, South Africa opened the tournament when they took on Cape Verde Islands, who had qualified for the first time.
Zambia, as the defending champions, were at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations to prove that
their victory against Ivory Coast in the final of the 28th edition of AFCON held in Gabon was
not a fluke. Most soccer followers were surprised by Zambias impressive performance at the
28th edition of the AFCON competition.
