When you talk about Zambian sports, to a Zambian, you actually talking about Zambian football!

Sports organization Controlling Zambian Sports

All individual sporting clubs are affiliated to their respective sports associations. The country has about 18 active national sports associations. These associations are responsible for the rules and regulations of the sports they govern.

All the individual associations fall under the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ).The NSCZ is the mother body of all sporting activities in the country. In order to compete at international level, the individual sports associations need to be members of international sporting bodies like FIFA (International Federation of Association Football), IOC (International Olympic Committee), IBA (international boxing association), IAAF (the International Amateur Athletic Federation), which is the international governing body for track and field and other similar international associations.

FIFA governs soccer competition worldwide by registering players and overseeing national soccer federations. The IOC delegates such functions as determining the site of the Olympic Games, holding the Olympic Games and the establishment of worldwide Olympic policies.

In fact Zambia's favorite sport, soccer (football) has a huge following. The football association of Zambia (FAZ) oversees the running of football in the country.

In 1993, the soccer fraternity was devastated when the entire national soccer team perished in a plane crash.

But the nation got together and came up with another team which surprised many by coming up second best at the African Nations Cup (ANC), a continental championship.

Other Zambian sports disciplines like boxing, tennis, basketball, golf, rugby and cricket are also popular. Motor sport has equally some following. Water sports are also popular especially among tourists down the Zambezi River or on the Kariba dam.

The country has been on the international sporting scene for decades now, and there have been some achievements in several sporting disciplines. Of course there have been some disappointing results here and there, but the sports men and women have managed to collect and still continue to collect trophies and medals at various competitions on the international arena.

Generally, Zambians enjoy playing sports. Young men and children play sports activities at any empty space. Learning institutions also offer students sports like athletics, softball, volleyball, netball, and soccer. Sporting activities are concentrated along the line of rail, the rural areas engage in fewer sports activities due to poor or lack of infrastructure.
