Zambia is grouped with the co–hosts Equatorial Guinea, Libya and Senegal. A total of 16 teams have qualified for the tournament. The African Nations cup championship will run from January 21st to 12th February 2012.This edition of the African Nations Cup is being co–hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

The Zambia versus Senegal match was characterized by each team dominating play in each half. Zambia were dominant in the first half and the Senegalese in the second half. Both teams played an open and free flowing game and they created a lot of scoring chances in the process.

The first half saw the Senegalese trailing by &2ndas;0 when Zambia was in control of the game. Senegal came into the game as slight favorites but they realized very late that things were not working in their favor. They changed the system of play in the second half of the game.

Victory for the Zambians came through the goals of Emmanuel Mayuka and Rainford Kalaba. Emmanuel Mayuka was the first to open the scores in the 12th minute when he headed home a free kick. The Senegalese almost equalized a few minutes later but their effort went wide.

After dominating play for much of the first half, Zambia scored their second goal. A pass from the captain Christopher Katongo to Rainford Kalaba ensured a 2–0 score line in favor of the Zambia national team before half time.

The 21st minute goal by Rainford Kalaba was one of the several chances that came Zambia–s way. They had missed a lot of chances in the first half which would have been converted into goals.

Senegal turned the game around in the second half and they managed to pull one back through their substitute Dame N'doye in the 74th minute. Though the Senegalese were a better side in the second half, Zambia held on to their lead and managed to carry the day, the final score ended at 2–1.

This is the second time Coach Herve Rernard is in charge of the Chipolopolo at the Africa Nations Cup. He was also in charge of the team at the Africa nations cup finals in Angola two years ago. The Frenchman has promised to do a better job this time around. And if the result of the Zambia versus Senegal match is anything to go by, then the Zambian soccer fans have a lot to expect.

Zambia's best performances were in the 1974 finals against Congo DR in Egypt and 20 years later in the 1994 finals against Nigeria in Tunisia when they came out runners up at both occassions.
