October 2014 Zambian Inflation Shoots To 7.9%
The CSO director John Kalumbi announced that the October 2014 Zambian inflation rate rose form 7.8 per cent recorded in September 2014 to 7.9 per cent in October 2014.
Announcing the figures on 30th October 2014, Mr. Kalumbi attributed the rise in the inflation rate to the rise in costs of food and non-food costs.

The 7.9% comprised of food and non-alcoholic beverage products amounted to 3.7 percentage points whereas the non-food products amounted to 4.2 percentage points.
Mr. Kalumbi said between October 2013 and October 2014, the annual rate of inflation increased for food and non-alcoholic beverages; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels.

A comparison of retail prices between September 2014 and October 2014 showed the following prices:
- 25 kg bag of breakfast Mealie meal - from K 70.37 to K 70.93
- Rape – from K 3.30 to K 3.37
- Cabbage – from K 1.89 to K 1.96
The province which recorded a higher inflation rate was Lusaka, followed by Copperbelt, Luapula, and Western provinces.
However there was a reduction in the inflation rate for Central, Northern, Muchinga North-Western but remained the same for Eastern and Southern provinces.
Eastern Province recorded the highest annual rate of inflation at 9.5 per cent while Central province had the lowest at 6.1 per cent.
Mr Kalumbi also reported that there was a reduction in the Zambia trade surplus, from K 102.1 million in August 2014 to K 100.2 million in September 2014.
This means that the country exported more in September 2014 than it imported in nominal terms.
Zambia’s major export products in September were from the intermediate goods category comprising copper cathodes and sections of refined copper accounting for 84.6 per cent.
