November 2012 Zambian Inflation – Inches To 6.9 Percent
The year&ndash:on–year November 2012 Zambian Inflation rate was recorded at 6.9 percent, higher than 6.8 percent recorded in October 2012.
The November 2012 inflation rate was released by the Central Statistics Office acting director Mr. Goodson Sinyenga on 29th November 2012.
Mr Sinyenga said the increase in the annual inflation was mainly attributed to increases in prices of some non–food items.
According to Mr Sinyenga
of the total 6.9 percent annual inflation rate in November 2012, food products accounted for 4.1 percentage points, while non–food products accounted for a total of 2.8 percentage points.
He further said the annual food inflation rate was recorded at 8.0 percent lower than 8.2 percent recorded in October 2012.
Whereas, the non–food inflation rate was recorded at 5.8 percent in November 2012 lower than 5.4 percent recorded in October 2012.
Mr Sinyenga pointed out that the annual rate of inflation increased for alcoholic beverages and tobacco; clothing and footwear; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels; and furnishings, household equipment and routine house maintenance equipment.
However, the annual inflation rate decreased for food and non–alcoholic beverages, health, transport, communication, recreation and culture, education, and restaurant hotel.
Retail Prices Between October 2012 And November 2012
A comparison of retail prices in the same period was as follows:
- 25 kg bag of breakfast mealie meal, from K 48,606 to K 49, 375
- 25 kg bag of roller meal, from K 25,038 to K 36,128
- 20 litre grain, from K 19,182 to K 20, 466
- 1 kg of tomato, from K 3,549 to K 4, 080
- 1 kg dried Kapenta, from K 80,101 to K 73, 763
Zambia Trade Surplus
In the month of October 2012, Zambia recorded a lower trade surplus which was valued at K 310.6 billion, compared to K 478.1 billion recorded in September 2012.
Major Exports In Zambia
Among the major exports in the Month of October were copper, accounting for 84 percent of total exports and others were raw materials, capital goods and consumer goods collectively accounting for 16.5 percent of the total exports in October 2012.
