May 2016 Zambian Inflation Now At 21.3 Percent

The May 2016 Zambian inflation rate slightly went down to 21.3 percent as compared to the April 2016 Zambian annual inflation rate which was recorded at 21.8 percent.


The reduction in the annual inflation rate was mainly attributed to reduction in some food prices such as maize grain, bread and buns.

Composition of The 21.3 % Overall Annual Inflation Rate

The Food and non-alcoholic beverage products accounted for 13.3 percent whereas non-food products accounted for 8.0 percent.

Lusaka had the highest contribution at 6.2 percent. Other provinces recorded as follows:

  • Central – 1.9%
  • Copperbelt – 3.8%
  • Eastern – 2.5%
  • Luapula – 1.1%
  • Lusaka – 6.2%
  • Northern/Muchinga – 1.4% 
  • North – Western – 1.0%
  • Southern – 2.7%
  • Western – 0.8%

Average Prices For Some Selected Products

Between April 2016 and May 2016, the movement of prices in some selected products were as follows:

  • 25 kg bag of Breakfast Mealie meal – K 87.04 to K 83.12
  • 25 kg bag of Roller Mealie meal – K 69.01 to K 66.86
  • 20 Litre tin of Maize grain – K 45.35 to K 35.84

April 2016 Zambia Trade Deficit

The country recorded a reduced trade deficit in April 2016 which was valued at K 751.3 Million as compared to K 782.3 recorded in March 2016. This means that Zambia imported more in April 2016 then it exported in nominal terms. 

Major Export Destinations by Commodity

The major export destinations in April 2016 were as follows:

  • Switzerland – Cathodes – 34.3%
  • China – Copper blisters – 22%
  • Singapore – Other Mineral Substances – 12.3%
  • Congo DR – Sulphuric Acid – 6.8%
  • South Africa – Other Articles of Cobalt – 6.5%

These five countries collectively accounted for 81.8 percent of Zambia’s export earnings in the month of April 2016.
