The March 2014 Zambian Inflation

The Central Statistical Office (CSO) announced that the March 2014 Zambian Inflation rate rose marginally to 7.7 per cent compared to 7.6 per cent recorded in February 2014.

This means that on average, prices increased by 7.7 per cent between March 2013 and March 2014.

Food items accounted for 3.9 percentage points while non-food items accounted for 3.8 percentage points.

Provincial Contribution to Overall Inflation

Northern Province and Muchinga Province contributed the highest to the overall inflation followed by Western Province. Central Province contributed the least.

Average Prices of Selected Items

Changes in national average prices of some selected items recorded between February 2014 and March 2014 were as follows:

  • 25kg bag of white breakfast mealie meal – K72.31 to K72 .55
  • 25kg bag of roller meal – K56.82 to K57.54.
  • 20 litre tin of maize grain (Corn) – K32.93 to K34.72.

Trade Surplus

The country recorded a trade surplus valued at K59 million in March 2014, down from K296 million recorded in February.

Major Exports

The major exports in February 2014 were mainly copper cathodes and sections of refined copper which accounted for 84.5 per cent of the total exports.

The other percentage of exports amounting to 15.5 per cent was from the raw materials, consumer goods and capital goods categories.
