The March 2013 Zambian Inflation – Down Again, Now To 6.6 Percent!
The March 2013 Zambian inflation rate reduced by 0.3 percentage points from 6.9 percent recorded in February 2013 down to 6.6 percent. The CSO (Central Statistical Office) attributed the decrease to a reduction in food and non-food items.

The CSO director, Mr. John Kalumbi, alluded to the fact that between March 2012 and March 2013, the annual inflation rate decreased for food and non-alcoholic beverages, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, restaurant, transport, education, hotel and miscellaneous goods and services.
On the other hand, there was an increase in the annual rate of inflation for foot wear, housing, water, electricity and other forms of energy.
Average Prices Of Selected Goods
The average price of a 25 kilogram bag of breakfast mealie-meal increased by 2.5 percent, from KR54.41 to KR55.77 whereas the average price of the same bag of roller meal decreased by 1.6 percent from KR43.20 down to KR42.53.
On the other hand, the average price of a 20 litre tin of maize (grain) increased by 5.0 percent to KR27.10 from KR25.81. In the same vein, the national average price of 1kg of kapenta increased by 9.3 percent from KR76.92 to KR84.09.
Contribution Of Different Items To Overall Inflation
Of the total 6.6 percent March 2013 inflation rate, food products accounted for 3.1 percent and non-food products accounted for 3.5 percent.
The CSO, in its March 2013 monthly bulletin indicated that the preliminary GDP growth stood at 7.3 percent. Estimates for agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors were 7.1 percent. This was however less than the 8 percent registered the previous year.
On the other hand the Bank of Zambia (BOZ) held the policy rate steady at 9.25 percent with the intention of moderating inflationary pressures in April 2013 in view of improved seasonal supply of food, vegetables and beef.
