Maamba Collieries Limited (MCL)
On 8th July 2011 Maamba Collieries Limited was reopened again, this time by President Rupiah Banda.
The company is located at Maamba Township in Sinazongwe district of Southern Province, which is about 350 kilometers from Lusaka.
The company, under the new management, owns the Zambias largest coal mine, at Maamba. It is majority-owned by Singapores Nava Bharat Pte Limited.
Maamba Collieries was incorporated in 1971 under the ownership of the government Republic of Zambia through Zambia Industrial and Mining Corporation (ZIMCO). The Company was taken over by Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines- Investment Holdings (ZCCM IH) in 2007.
To enable MCL realize its full potential in coal mining, Nava Bharat (Singapore ) Pte Ltd, joined as a strategic equity and technical partner by acquiring 65 percent equity stake in April 2010.
Up to the end of June 2011, Nava Bharat Pte Ltd had spent about US$33 million into refurbishment of the mine. The company is planning to be a key supplier of coal to the mines as it was once was.
Of course, in addition to mining, the company also sells coal to major industries in Zambia including copper smelters, chemicals, cement, breweries, and textiles as well as exporting to neighboring countries.
According to the terms of the contract, Nava Bharat had successfully acquired 65 percent of shareholding in Maamba Collieries while 35 percent went to ZCCM-IH. For this, Nava Bharat was expected to pay US$26 million.
The company has estimated coal reserves of 65 million tonnes which are expected to last over 70 years.
Coal Mining and Processing
Mining of coal is by open pit method using state-of-the-art Heavy Earth Moving Equipment with fuel efficient Diesel Engines.
The raw coal is processed in the Coal handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP). The plant employs modern technology which ensures zero discharge of effluents, thereby eliminating contamination of surface and ground water.
Finally, the water used for washing of coal is completely recycled. This makes the coal processing activity environmentally friendly.
