June 2012 Zambian Inflation Shot Up To 6.7 Percent

The June 2012 Zambian Inflation increased again by 0.10 percent to 6.7 in June 2012 from 6.6 percent in May 2012.

Central Statistical Office director John Kalumbi who announced the Zambian inflation rate in Ndola at Savoy Hotel on 28th June 2012, said the increase in the inflation rate was attributed to increases in some food prices.

Composition Of The June 2012 Inflation Rate

Food items accounted for 6.3 percentage points whereas non–food products in the consumer price index (CPI)accounted for a total of 3.1 percentage points.

On average, prices almost remained unchanged between May 2012 and June 2012. This meant that there was a 0.30 percentage point increase in the annual food inflation.

Mr. Kalumbi said:

“Between May 2012 and June 2012, the annual rate of inflation increased for food and non–alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, transport, recreation and culture and miscellaneous goods and services while it decreased for clothing and footwear, furniture, household equipment and routine house maintenance, health, communication, education and restaurant and hotel.”
Mr. Kalumbi said the annual food inflation rate increased from 6.8 percent in May 2012 to 7.1 percent in June 2012.

Zambian Trade Surplus

The country recorded a trade surplus in the month of May 2012 of K 278.3 billion from K 129.6 billion recorded in April 2012.

Since January 2012, the country has had monthly trade surplus. The lowest was recorded in February 2012 at K 47.4 billion while the highest was recorded at K348.8 billion in January 2012.
