How Much Caffeine In Tea Do You Consume?

How much caffeine in tea do you consume daily? Or just how much caffeine does your favorite drink contain?

To understand the answer to this question, one should first know what caffeine is and what it’s not.

Caffeine was discovered in the 1820s in Coffee. But its presence is not confined to coffee only; it occurs naturally in tea, kola nuts, cocoa, and certain soft drinks and in some plants as well. It is a derivative of xanthine.

How Much Caffeine In Tea? There Are Health Benefits!

Caffeine, when drunk in moderation, has been known to:
  • Reduce physical fatigue
  • Restore alertness when drowsiness occurs
  • Increase alertness
  • Stimulate metabolism
  • Increase in dopamine levels in the blood, hence an improved mood
Now, back to the question of how much caffeine does your favorite beverage or drink contain, let’s take an example of a cup of tea, the world famous beverage.

The caffeine content of the same tea can vary depending on different factors like roasting, grinding and even brewing time.

Other factors that affect caffeine content are tea leaf size, type of tea plant, position of the leaf on the tea bush, cultivation practices, water temperature and steeping or brewing time.

The following shows caffeine contained in different varieties of tea in a cup of tea made using loose leaves:
  • Black Tea: 23 - 110 mg
  • Oolong Tea: 12 - 55 mg
  • Green Tea: 8-36 mg
  • White Tea: 6 - 25 mg
However, you can lower the quantity of Caffeine in your cup by brewing tea using less tea leaves in less time and with slightly cooler water.

Caution should be taken however because habitual excessive drinking of caffeine causes unpleasant physical and mental conditions like insomnia, restlessness, irritability, headaches, and nervousness.
