The February 2014 Zambian Inflation Rate

The February 2014 Zambian inflation rate increased to 7.6 percent from the 7.3 percent recorded in January 2014.


The CSO (Central Statistical Office) director, Mr. John Kalumbi, attributed the development mainly due to increases in the prices of Food and Non-alcoholic beverages, Alcoholic beverages and Tobacco, Health, Recreation and Culture.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose up to 136.96 in February 2014 from 127.32 in February 2013.

Average Prices Of Selected Goods

A comparison of retail prices between January and February 2014 showed an increase in the national average price of a 25 kilogram bag of breakfast mealie meal by 0.5 percent from K71.92 to K72.31.

Some Goods Whose Prices Have Gone Up

The national average price of the same quantity of roller mealie meal also increased by 1.8 percent from K55.80 to K56.82.

The average price of a 20 litre tin of maize (grain) increased by 5.2 percent from K31.31 to K32.93. In the same vein, the national average price of 1kg of Rape (vegetable) decreased by 9.7 percent from K3.90 to K3.52 during the same period.

Provincial Contribution to Overall Inflation

  • Lusaka Province-2.1 percent
  • Copperbelt Province-1.6 percent
  • Luapula Province-0.3 percent
  • North-western Province-0.3 percent

Trade Surplus

The CSO director Mr. John Kalumbi also revealed that Zambia recorded a trade surplus of K 283 million in January 2014 from K 161 million recorded in December 2013. This meant that Zambia exported more in January 2014 than the previous month.
