The December 2012 Zambian inflation rises by 0.4%

The December 2012 Zambian inflation rate increased by 0.4% during the month of December in comparison with the month of November 2012, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Acting Central Statistical Office Director Peter Mukuka said that this translated into an overall average increase of 7.3 per cent in commodities between December 2011 and December 2012.

The increase in the cost of food products and non-food products led to the increase in the annual inflation rate.

Retail prices during the period between November 2012 and December 2012 for food, beverages and tobacco, rent and household energy, furniture and household goods, other goods and services increased.

Contribution To The Overall Inflation

Mr Mukuka said food products accounted for 4.4 percentage points, while non-food products accounted for 2.9 percentage points.

In provincial contribution to overall inflation, the Copper belt province had contributed 2.0 percentage points seconded by Lusaka at 1.8 per cent while North-western province was trailing with 0.1 percentage points.

A comparison of retail prices between November 2012 and December 2012 shows that the price of a 25 kg bag of roller meal increased by 18.0 per cent from K36, 128 to K42, 962. And a 25 kg bag of breakfast mealie meal increased by 14.8 per cent from K49, 375 to K56, 675.

Trade Surplus Drops

The country recorded a drop in trade surplus from 291.2 billion recorded in October 2012 to 112.8 billion in November 2012.

Major Export Destinations In December 2012

Zambia’s export destinations in December 2012 were:
  • Switzerland – 43.1 per cent
  • China – 20.6 per cent
  • South Africa – 8.8 per cent
  • Democratic Republic of Congo – 6.4 per cent
  • Zimbabwe – 5.2 per cent
