Chishimba Falls Are One Of Zambia's Spectacular Waterfalls

Chishimba Falls (also known as Chisimba falls) are located about 33 kilometers to the west of Kasama town. The falls are actually made up of three individual successive water falls;

  • The upper falls(Mutumuna).
  • The middle falls (Kayela rapids)
  • And the main falls (Chishimba).

Mutumuna Falls

Some distance above the Falls are located the Mutumuna falls. The Bemba people, who resides near the falls believes that the spirit of Mutumuna resides at the falls. Regular offerings by the high priest are made at the falls to appease the spirits. Due to the sacred nature of the falls, misbehavior, such as insults or curses are disallowed within the vicinity of the falls.

The Chishimba Falls

The Falls are also regarded as a sacred place. The bembas believe the spirit of Chishimba resides in the cave below the falls. Bad behavior is equally not condoned at the falls. On the Western bank of the river there is a rain forest and there is a camp site just above the falls.

Mutumuna falls has a drop of 20 meters falling to the foot of the falls below, and the main falls, or the Chishimba has a drop of 30 meters.

The Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) has taken advantage of the falls and has developed a hydro-electric power plant just above the falls. This has however not diminished the beauty of the waterfalls. The hydro power plant supplies power to the nearby Kasama town and the surrounding areas.

This is one place you will enjoy seeing the next time you happen to be in Kasama town in Muchinga province. The Falls are quite magnificent and well worth the visit. They are truly one of Zambia's spectacular waterfalls!
