August 2014 Zambian Inflation
Rate Remained Unchanged At 8.00 Per cent!
The Central Statistics Office revealed that the August 2014 Zambian inflation rate remained at the same rate of 8 per cent as that of July 2014. The recorded rate went beyond 6.5 per cent, the Central bank’s end-year target for 2014.
The August 2014 inflation figures were released by Central Statistical Office Director, John Kalumbi on 28 August 2014.

The total 8.0 per cent annual inflation rate comprised of food and non-alcoholic beverage products at 3.6 per cent and non-food products at 4.4 per cent.
Zambia Trade Surplus For July 2014
The country recorded a trade surplus valued at K 117.2 million in July 2014. This was an increment from K 43.8 million recorded in June 2014. This means that the country exported more in July 2014 than it imported in nominal terms. According to Central Statistical director John Kalumbi, the rise in the trade surplus was attributed to increased exports in both traditional and non-traditional goods.
It is worth noting that the highest surplus was recorded in January 2014 at K 295.3 million, while the lowest was recorded in April 2014 at K 29.5 million.
Zambia’s major export destinations in July 2014 were as follows:
- Switzerland, accounted for 54.4 per cent
- China , accounted for 13.00 per cent
- Democratic Republic of Congo, accounted for 5. per cent
- South Africa, accounted for 5.0 per cent
- Australia, accounted for 4.3 per cent
The annual food inflation rate for July was recorded at 7.0 per cent from 6.9 per cent recorded in June 2014.
The annual non-food inflation decreased to 9.1 percentage points from 9.2 per cent recorded in July 2014.
Average Prices of Selected Goods
A comparison of retail prices between July 2014 and August 2014 for mealie meal showed the following prices:
- 25 kg bag of breakfast Mealie meal decreased from K 73.20 to K72.33
- 25 kg bag of roller mealie meal reduced from K 55.77 to K51.79
