The April 2014 Zambian inflation rate increased to 7.8 Percent from 7.7 percent recorded in March. The CSO (Central Statistical Office) attributed the changes to the upward movement in prices of non-food items like cement, charcoal and motor vehicles.
Mr John Kalumbi, the CSO director said between April 2013 and 2014 , the annual rate of inflation increased for alcoholic beverages, tobacco, clothing and footwear, furnishings, household equipment , miscellaneous goods and services.
During the same period, the annual rate of inflation decreased for housing, water electricity, gas and other fuels, transport, restaurant and hotel.
A comparison of retail prices between March and April 2014 showed an increase in the national average price of a 25 kilogram bag of breakfast mealie meal by 1.1 percent from K72.55 to K73.37.
The average price of one kilogramme of dried Siavonga kapenta also increased from K94.27 to to K99.01. An increament of 5 percent.
